We would like to invite you to two training webinars addressing dual-use issues in enabling technologies research organised in the context of work for the European Commission DG Research and Innovation by the Joint Institute for Innovation Policy, Joanneum Research, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Austrian Institute of Technology and Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação.
Dual-use technologies are already part of our everyday lives. Born as spin-offs of military projects, dual-use technologies are now developed in both the military and the civilian domains and operate in a vast range of fields, from biology to security. The European Union has followed two parallel tracks on the development of dual-use technologies, linked to their potential, different uses. After the initial approach that led to the securitisation of this issue and focused on the control of dual-use technologies exports, in the past decade the EU has encouraged research into dual-use potentials to promote economic growth and to support European industry. The training sessions will cover the different approaches within the European Union to dual-use and offer an analysis on the importance and good practices of dual-use.
The training is a part of an activity undertaken for the Study on Dual Use Materials – Addressing dual-use issues in enabling technologies research for Directorate D - Industrial Technologies - of DG Research and Innovation. The study addresses how to make best use of dual-use research from civil to defence applications and vice-versa.
The first training module, on June 18th 2019 15:30-17:00 CEST, will focus on reporting our findings on European Union Dual Use Guidelines as well as giving an overview from Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The second training module, on July 1st 10:30-12:00 CEST, will focus on addressing good practices in dual use research and protecting intellectual property generated through research with dual use potential.
The training will be online via webinar and participation is free, but registration prior to the event is required. We kind ask that you register by June 12, 2019. The registration links for the webinars are below:
